Diffused Lighting Studies

I've been taking an online painting course at Schoolism.  Here are five pieces for the first week's assignment of painting under a diffused lighting situation (white light, soft shadows).  It's been helpful in getting me to tackle difficult lighting situations and just getting out there and practicing more.  I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the animation industry, as most of the courses on Schoolism are geared towards technical skills.   There's also a really cool option of taking a version of the class where you can get video feedback and crits from the professors themselves, but those are much more expensive and spots fill up really quickly.

Journey to the West!

One of my all-time favorite stories!  Journey to the West delighted me as a kid and I still rewatch some of the stories today.  My favorite character is Sun Wukong (Monkey) because of his crafty wit and strength...although he was a huge prankster who liked solving problems with his fists.  Rewatching the story as an adult I love the character dynamics even more.  Monkey and Pigsy are always bickering and trying to one up and trick each other.  Level-headed Friar Sand is always caught in the middle.  I love the dramatic scenes of Monkey calling out for his monk Shifu.  The poor Dragon Prince spends 99% of his on-screen time as a horse.

Italy!

Another piece for 72 Meeting Street!  It got me feeling nostalgic for my trip to Italy about 4 (! whoa) years ago.  Some of the essential icons of the trip were the beautiful cypress trees, the fountains, the lovely architecture, the beautiful lighting (and hot sun) and the long walks to and from class.  I also incorporated my love of little mark making patterns at the time in the trees.

Two Truths and A Lie

Ah I've forgotten to update this blog in a while.  Anyways this is a piece for 72 Meeting Street and it's based on the ice breaker game "Two Truths and a Lie."

Noble Heart

A new 72 Meeting Street piece for a piece inspired by a song.  This one is based on Phox's "Noble Heart."  I am a bit of a romantic...I also just came back from a trip to China to visit family and now I want to tap into my Asian aesthetic roots (whereas this is very obviously western imagery haha).  Maybe for a future piece~

Interior study

A continuation of me practicing backgrounds, lighting and such.  I'm not inclined to draw interiors usually unless the lighting is very pretty.

Dimsum

A piece for 72 Meeting Street's theme of favorite food.  I love dimsum! Or just in general the ability to try a lot of different things without having to commit to a huge portion of it hehe.

Where the Wildflowers Grow

Another piece I made for the 72 Meeting Street blog, which is now on tumblr for easier following and updates!  I am still playing around with digital because as much as I love the textual qualities of traditional media sometimes it's easier to get something done faster in digital.  Practice practice practice..

Sketch & color study:

Final:

I miss some of the looseness and values in the color study that got lost when adding texture in the final...  I'll get the hang of it eventually!

Year of the Sheep!

Chinese New Year is this Thursday and it's the year of the sheep!  It's also the end of my benmingnian (year of the horse) so I am supposedly released from my year of bad luck and wearing of red to ward off bad luck (not that either happened).

Here are some sheep-themed postcards I made for my friends!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Another great alternative to number 3 is watching Princess Bride and swooning every time Westley says "As you wish."  I really want to try number 1 but alas I'm allergic to cats.  Anyone who gets the reference in number 2 gets an A+ in my book.

Another piece for the 72meetingst blog!  Had a lot of fun with this one and poking fun of myself.

Earliest Memory

One of the recent assignments for 72 Meeting Street was to depict your earliest memory.  I always think it's very fun to recount and hear other people's earliest memories.  It's a strange experience too as I'm never 100% sure whether I am remembering a dream or an actual memory.  It makes me wonder what I will remember in another 20 or so years.

72 Meeting Street Stuff!

Here are two pieces and sketches of work I made for the 72 Meeting Street blog.  It's good to have a little time to make personal work.  I'll try to be better about making more work this year~  Please check out the work of my ultra talented friends Zoe Bae, Susie So, and Karen Sung who also contribute!
